Bobby Humphrey, Alabama’s career rushing leader, broke a bone in his left foot in Saturday’s 44-10 Southeastern Conference victory over Vanderbilt and is likely out for the season.

“We’re going to wait until tomorrow, but it looks now like he’s going to be out for the season,” Alabama spokesman Steve Townsend said. “He broke the same bone he had broken before.”

Humphrey carried 24 times for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns against Vanderbilt, increasing his career yardage total to 3,402.

Humphrey broke a bone in his left foot during spring practice and was on crutches for most of the summer.

The Tide suffered another blow when cornerback and kick returner Gene Jelks, who returned a punt 37 yards for Alabama’s first touchdown, was knocked out for the year with a knee injury.

“I don’t know the medical term, but he has suffered an injured right knee and he will be out for the season,” said Townsend, who added that Jelks is scheduled for surgery today.

Townsend said both players, although seniors, will be eligible for another year at Alabama under a medical hardship rule.
