Local News in Brief : Thieves Get a Big Haul in Car Break-In

Share

Thieves who broke into a parked car and grabbed a camera bag sitting on the back seat Monday got away with $500,000 worth of emeralds and other gems, police said.

The car had been parked outside the Mitsubishi Bank on Hanover Road in Industry by Ronald Hawes, 37. He was carrying the gems for the Bill Hawes Colombian Emerald Co., according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Wahla.

“Hawes overheard a teller say that a car in the bank’s parking lot had just been broken into,” Wahla said. Hawes went outside and saw two men, one carrying the camera bag, jump into a brown Ford Granada carrying two other people.

Wahla said it was not know if the thieves knew the bag contained gems.
