A Los Angeles man pleaded guilty Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl who lived with her aunt in the same apartment where the defendant also was living with the victim’s cousin.

Superior Court Judge Herbert Exarhos scheduled an Oct. 25 sentencing for Terrence Russell, 21, who turned himself in at police headquarters the day after the June 30 killing of Selina Whit.

The youngster, who had moved from Fontana to the East San Diego apartment in May, was shot in the head while watching television in a bedroom of the apartment.

Her aunt, Gretchen Carter, told detectives that she heard a gunshot in the bedroom, then saw Russell run out with a gun in his hand.

Russell faces six years in prison for the accidental shooting, which occurred when he jumped onto a bed with the gun in his hand and it discharged.
