Local News in Brief : Mysterious Fumes Prompt Evacuation

About 100 workers at Lockheed Aircraft Co. in Burbank were evacuated Tuesday after several complained of a chemical odor and “a tingling sensation on the skin,” a company official said.

Seven workers on the second floor of Building 180, a research area, complained of chemical fumes about 10:54 a.m., Lockheed spokesman Bill Spaniel said. All 100 workers on the second floor of the facility were evacuated, he said, and remained outside for about an hour.

Personnel on the first floor were not affected and remained in the building, Spaniel said.

Lockheed firefighters were assisted in the evacuation by Burbank paramedics, who examined the plant employees for possible injuries, he said. “Apparently they didn’t find anything wrong” with the workers, he said. “They all checked out.”

Lockheed health and safety officials searched the second-floor area but could not detect an odor or the source of any fumes, and all workers were allowed to return to the building at 11:52 a.m., Spaniel said.

He declined to elaborate on what kind of work is done by employees inside the research facility.
