THE SEOUL GAMES / DAY 13 : Graf Has No Trouble Defeating Garrison

Share

Steffi Graf won her 39nd consecutive singles match and left Zina Garrison of the United States in a shambles in the process. West Germany’s Graf, only the second woman to complete a successful tennis Grand Slam, beat Garrison, 6-2, 6-0, in a semifinal of the Olympic tennis tournament Thursday.

Graf will play Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina in Saturday’s final for the gold medal. Sabatini reached the final by beating Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria in the other semifinal, 6-1, 6-1. It was almost as quick as Graf’s match. Graf took 58 minutes, Sabatini 1 hour 6 minutes.

The last player to beat Graf--in fact the only one to beat her this year--was Sabatini. Graf has a 61-2 record this year and last lost in April at Amelia Island, Fla., to Sabatini.
