Honor Teacher Supports Bush

Jaime Escalante may know how to make students pass math tests, but he shows a woeful ignorance of the Reagan-Bush record on education (“Garfield’s Honor Teacher Supports Bush,” Metro, Sept. 16). From the very beginning, this Administration has made education one of the last priorities in its budget, diminishing educational opportunities for all students, particularly for those of minority background.

And why not? George Bush’s statement to a classroom of minority students says it all: Some young people (presumably his audience) “don’t have to go to college to achieve success. . . .” They can be the laborers “who build our buildings, who send them soaring to the sky” by their sweat. The elite, of whom Bush is one, can plan the buildings, draw the blueprints, finance the construction, and do the brain work that is required to make the buildings soar to the sky.

Bush’s stereotypical thinking reveals what he really believes about the “little brown ones” of America.

In supporting Bush, Escalante is not only opting for a continuation of miserly Republican policies, but is betraying education and the future of Latinos and other minorities.

Come November, I will vote to send Bush soaring, so he can eat his SDI pie in the sky!
