Local News in Brief : City Funds Sought for Gang Programs
The NAACP and the Brotherhood Crusade announced Friday that they have formed a coalition with other organizations to seek $1.2 million in funding from the city of Los Angeles to pay for gang intervention programs in South-Central Los Angeles.
Anthony Essex, president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People, said the money could come from $2.5 million in funds already earmarked in the city budget for gang programs but not yet allocated. The Gang Outreach and Direct Services Project coalition, which also includes the Tabernacle Faith Baptist Church and Muhammad Mosque No. 27, will present its proposal to the City Council on Oct. 27.
Spokesmen for the coalition said they will seek the funding for the Community Youth Sports and Arts Foundation, the Youth Intervention Project, the Tabernacle Faith Baptist Church and other groups and programs.
