The illustration of presidential candidates Bush and Dukakis drawing pistols and about to shoot each other was an extremely poor choice. For that matter, the title of the article, “The Shoot-out,” was a poor choice.

The purpose of debates is to avoid--not to glorify--violence where one emerges the victor and the other lies dead.

This is particularly true because the “dead” candidate will, it is hoped, still contribute in some way to the good of the country.
