UC President David Gardner has given chancellors at the university’s nine campuses until Jan. 1 to submit plans for increasing the number of minorities and women in graduate school. He also hopes to increase the number of minorities and women employed by the university. Gardner said the “steady increase in minority enrollment at the freshman level”--where 19% this year were minorities historically under-represented at the university--was encouraging. However, he citied , “the small percentage of minorities in our graduate schools” and the “small number of women and minorities” on the faculty and in upper-level administrative posts. Currently, 89% of all graduate students are white or Asian American.
