‘Ethnic Purity’

Share

The article “Tunnel-Form Construction” (Sept. 25) reiterates the existence of a kind of “ethnic purity” required in construction by and for Japanese and Nisei in the Los Angeles area.

For this project, architect, contractor and concrete subcontractor fit the “requirements.” But it appears that well-known engineers Wheeler & Gray had to associate with a Nisei to get the work.

Fortunately, this attitude does not as strongly pervade other groups or industries. Surely the seller of a $22-million New York fixer to Japanese (Hot Property) was not an Asian.
