Thousands of environmentalists in the Hungarian capital of Budapest formed human chains near two bridges spanning the Danube to protest against a hydroelectric dam being built on a picturesque bend of the river. Hungarian and Western environmentalists say the Nagymaros dam, being built in tandem with one at Gabcikovo, Czechoslovakia, will pollute the drinking water of millions and harm wildlife and scenery. The Hungarian Parliament is due to debate the issue during a three-day session beginning Wednesday, but it appears unlikely that it will overturn the government’s intention to go ahead with the project.
