Chinese Urged to Be Skeptical of Beggars

BEIJING —
Chinese have been told to harden their hearts to the country’s growing army of professional beggars, on the grounds that most are swindlers who get rich by pretending to be poor.
The latest issue of the official Beijing Review said that only 20% of China’s beggars had been driven to their trade by “difficulties in life,” with the rest choosing it as an easy way to make money. Beggars in some cities made more than $27 a day.
