Burmese security forces shot and killed five looters stealing materials from a bridge construction site in Rangoon, official Rangoon Radio reported. The killings brought the official death toll to more than 435 in the past 17 days of military rule. However, diplomats and opposition sources estimate that about 1,000 people have been killed since the military took power Sept. 18. Meanwhile, former Rangoon University students who were training to become military officers have formed urban guerrilla bands and are preparing to attack soldiers, a spokesman for the group said. He identified the University Student Volunteers Force and the University Training Corps as two guerrilla groups undergoing daily training.
