The Chicago White Sox fired Manager Jim Fregosi today in the wake of the team’s 71-90 record this season, the baseball club’s worst record since 1980.

White Sox spokesman Tim Clodjeaux said General Manager Larry Himes hopes to appoint a new manager before the baseball winter meetings in Atlanta in early December. Fregosi, 46, who managed the Angels from 1978 to 1981, had succeeded current Oakland A’s manager Tony LaRussa in June, 1986, as the White Sox field boss and was in the first year of a new multi-year contract.
