Guard Isiah Thomas signed an 8-year contract worth at least $16 million Thursday, making him the highest-paid player in Detroit Pistons history.

The contract includes incentive clauses that will allow Thomas to earn as much as $3 million a season. Thomas threatened to sit out the opening of training camp if a new deal was not reached.

Thomas, 27, averaged 19.5 points last season, when the Pistons won the Eastern Conference title and lost to the Lakers in the National Basketball Assn. Finals.
