Cold Air Spreads Over Midwest, East

A dome of high pressure reached from the central plains states to New England on Friday, spreading cold Canadian air over the Midwest and the East. The mercury dipped to 28 degrees Friday in Rockford, Ill., tying the record for that date set in 1952.

Low temperatures Friday morning fell below freezing over northern New England, eastern New York state, central and southern Wisconsin, northwest Illinois, parts of Iowa and the Dakotas, the central Appalachians and the central Rockies.

Frost advisories were posted for overnight in southwest Indiana and eastern Kentucky. Frost and freeze warnings were in effect for western Pennsylvania and the mountains of North Carolina.

Showers extended from the lower Great Lakes to western New England on Friday. Highs were in the 40s across northern New England. Showers and thunderstorms were reported over southern Florida.
