Doctors used a new antibiotic Friday and Emperor Hirohito’s fever declined slightly, but reports said there was danger that an infection in his digestive system would spread.

Although he showed no outward signs of further internal bleeding, the 87-year-old emperor received another transfusion to counteract anemia and because doctors doubted the hemorrhaging had stopped, palace officials said. It was the 15th day of blood transfusions.
