How could writer Ray Bradbury refer to the Soviet Union as "Russia"?

No wonder Americans are regarded as ignoramuses when it comes to international relations, diplomacy, world history and geography. Even Mikhail Gorbachev himself once reprimanded some summit participants on the correct use of his country's name.
