Suspected separatist guerrillas massacred at least 36 Sinhalese villagers in northern Sri Lanka, a military spokesman said. “We believe it was done by the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam guerrillas),” he said. Details were not immediately available. Meanwhile, police in three towns used tear gas and batons to disperse thousands protesting the pact under which Indian troops have been in Sri Lanka for a year trying to end the island nation’s ethnic conflict. Many of Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese oppose the pact, under which minority Tamils are to be allowed a form of self-rule.
