Local News in Brief : Gunman Opens Fire on Street; 2 Killed

Two people were shot and killed late Tuesday afternoon by a gunman who barricaded himself in an apartment in the Sawtelle area for four hours before surrendering, Los Angeles police said.

The unidentified gunman opened fire on a woman on the street outside an apartment building in the 1600 block of Colby Avenue about 5:30 p.m. and, moments later, chased down a man and shot him as well, Police Capt. Maurice Moore said.

Witnesses said the woman was shot on the street at close range up to 10 times. She was dead at the scene. The wounded man died at UCLA Medical Center.

The gunman barricaded himself in an apartment where he is believed to live, police said.

Moore said SWAT members were about to enter the apartment when the man surrendered at 9:30 p.m.
