Ailing Emperor Hirohito’s jaundice, a symptom of liver failure, has significantly worsened, according to Japanese press reports. However, the official palace spokesman said that the emperor’s condition was stable. The Kyodo news service and major newspapers, though, quoted sources in the Imperial Palace who said that signs of jaundice have doubled, indicating an increase in the intestinal inflammation that set off Hirohito’s health crisis Sept. 19.
