Lemieux’s 3 Goals Lift Penguins, 8-7
Mario Lemieux scored his first 3 goals of the season, 2 of them short-handed, to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to an 8-7 victory Tuesday over the Washington Capitals, who had 4 goals from Mike Ridley.
Lemieux, who was held to 1 assist by the Capitals in Friday night’s season opener, added 2 assists Tuesday.
Ridley’s game, the best of his career, raised his season goal total to 5, which leads the NHL.
Washington trailed, 7-2, after Lemieux’s third goal at 12:34 of the second period. But the Capitals scored four times, aided by a 5-minute major penalty and game misconduct against Rob Brown.
After the Capitals cut the deficit to 7-6, Pittsburgh’s Bob Errey scored at 16:12 of the third period.
