Motorola Inc. reported that profit climbed 24.2% in the third quarter to $87 million from year-ago levels, but that amount was 15% to 20% less than what industry analysts had expected. The Schaumburg, Ill.-based communications and computer company attributed the gain largely to sharply higher operating profits over year-ago levels in its communications and semiconductor products sectors.
