California’s orange crop is expected to be 8% larger than last year’s at 61 million boxes, while Arizona’s crop looked good for a 33% increase to 2.4 million boxes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. The nation’s 1988-89 orange crop was estimated at 217 million boxes, up 10%, with Florida’s anticipated 152 million boxes the largest, also up 10%. California’s grapefruit production of 66.7 million boxes would be up 5%, but Arizona’s 1.3 million boxes would mark a 13% drop. The forecast for Florida grapefruit anticipates a record 57 million boxes, up 6%, and Texas’ crop is expected to increase to 4.5 million, up 18%.
