A woman has been ordered to appear in court on a charge that she illegally blocked out the red lobster and word “Vacationland” on her Maine license plates.

“Right now, I’m looking into freedom of speech laws,” said Pamela Prodan, 37, of Wilton, who said she might hire a lawyer to represent her in Franklin County District Court on Oct. 25.

Police had warned Prodan that the plates were illegal before they stopped her station wagon on Sept. 29, police Chief James Parker said.

A state law makes it illegal to obscure numbers, letters, words, illustrations, seals or other distinguishing marks on vehicle registration plates. Maximum penalties for violation of the law are six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
