Santa Clarita Gets Its Official Seal

Share

At long last, Santa Clarita has an official seal.

The seal, developed over eight months, shows one of the young city’s trademark oak trees as well as rolling hills, puffy clouds, tract homes and an industrial building. “It represents all the things we want to preserve in this valley,” Councilwoman Jan Heidt said.

The seal was based on more than 180 designs submitted during a citywide contest in the spring, which drew some unconventional entries--such as a design showing a developer’s bulldozer knocking down an oak tree. In May, the council set aside the winning entry by Todd Cooper, a Green Valley graphics artist, saying the design reflected only Santa Clarita’s past, not its future.

Cooper got to keep the $500 first prize, but the city hired Gormley-Takai Inc., a Los Angeles design and marketing firm, to produce the logo for $5,000.
