A Ugandan Boeing 707 jetliner believed to be carrying 53 people crashed and burst into flames near Leonardo da Vinci Airport outside Rome, killing about 40 people, airport authorities said. Authorities said the crash occurred as the plane approached Rome’s main airport for landing. The jetliner was on a flight from London’s Gatwick Airport and was believed to be carrying 43 passengers and 10 crew members. Police reported there were seven survivors. The plane hit an Alitalia Airlines hangar under construction on a street near the airport and burst into flames, authorities said. A spokesman for the Civil Protection Ministry said the plane had broken in two.
