“Beany and Cecil” has become the first casualty of the 1988-89 Saturday-morning season: ABC has canceled the series after only five episodes. Jennie Trias, ABC vice president of children’s programming, said the program was “not the show we bought conceptually and development-wise, and was not the show we wanted.” The late Bob Clampett created Beany and Cecil the Sea-Sick Sea Serpent for his puppet show “Time for Beany,” which won three Emmys between 1949 and 1957. An animated version of the program ran from 1962 to 1967. The new version was created by DIC Enterprises (“The Real Ghostbusters”) in association with Bob Clampett Productions. Reruns of Hanna-Barbera’s “The Flintstone Kids” have tentatively been scheduled to replace “Beany.”
