Compaq Computer Corp. unveiled its first laptop computer, a 14-pound machine that will compete with models from companies that have been in the laptop market for years. Analysts said the respected Compaq label should give the new SLT-286 a fast start in competition with entrenched competitors such as Zenith Electronics Corp., NEC Corp., Toshiba Corp, International Business Machines Corp. and Grid Systems Corp. Suggested retail prices for the SLT-286 are $5,399 or $5,999, depending on whether the hard disk is 20 megabytes or 40 megabytes.
