A 22-year veteran of the Grand Rapids Police Department opened fire in the Kent County courthouse today and killed his estranged wife, the county’s first woman judge, authorities said.

Police said that Clarence Ratlif was taken into custody and that his estranged wife, District Judge Carol S. Irons, 39, was killed in the shooting shortly after noon today.
