Korea Pullout Possible: Reagan

President Reagan said today he sees the possibility that the United States could withdraw troops from South Korea in the near future, but the State Department’s top Far Eastern specialist said there is “certainly no intention” to do so.

The President, entering a meeting with South Korean President Roh Tae Woo, was asked by a reporter if he could “envision a time in the near future when the U.S. would be reducing its military presence.” Reagan said, “That is a possibility, but it would not be one of us just withdrawing--it would be one of (being) no longer needed.”
