The State : Stores in N.Y. Shun Grapes

Share

Red Apple markets in New York City became the first supermarket chain to join the United Farm Workers boycott of California table grapes. Officials of the chain of 26 stores said the move was largely symbolic, because the California grape season is nearly over. Company chairman John Catsimatides made the announcement at one of his stores, where he was joined by several local political leaders and two daughters of the late U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. The UFW urges the public not to buy grapes until growers stop using pesticides the union says are dangerous to harvesters and consumers.
