Mayor Hatch of Monterey Park
The Asian and Latino immigrants in Monterey Park are the newest players in a rerun that has been playing for generations (“Controversy Is OK With Him: New Monterey Park Mayor’s Views Stir Up the Residents,” Metro, Oct. 11).
These new immigrants are facing the same resentment and suspicion as did their earlier counterparts, the Irish, Italians, Jews et al.
However, the skin color and cultural gap of today’s new kids on the block exacerbate their difficulties to adjust.
Nevertheless, just as it had been with earlier immigrants, it is the children of these Asian and Latino newcomers (many who have achieved scholastic excellence) who will begin the process of Americanization and the blending of the best of cultures that so enriches American society today.
