Judge Dismisses Jury in Swindall Trial on Perjury

ATLANTA — A federal judge today dismissed the jury in the perjury trial of Rep. Pat Swindall (R-Ga.) because of flyers that the congressman mailed out, making it unlikely that Swindall could be tried before Election Day.
U.S. District Judge Robert Vining said he believed that Swindall violated court rules by sending out campaign mass mailings that reached residents who were potential jurors in the case both last week and this week.
Vining said he was “not inclined” to use the only other avenue through which Swindall could be tried before the election, a non-jury trial with Vining determining the verdict.
Swindall faces 10 counts of lying to a grand jury about a deal involving laundered drug money.
