UC Irvine will stage a “Rainbow Festival” Tuesday through Thursday to celebrate cultural diversity on the campus.

The purpose of the festival is to “promote cultural sensitivity and to reinforce the importance of positive interaction among diverse groups on campus,” said Marguerite Bonous-Hammarth, a university spokeswoman.

Film actor Haing S. Ngor will open the festival with a lecture on his experiences in Cambodia during the reign of the Khmer Rouge. His talk will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at South Coast Community Church in Irvine. Tickets cost $7, $6 and $5 and are available at the Bren Center Box Office on campus. Ngor won an Academy Award for his performance in the movie “The Killing Fields.” He also is the author of the book “A Cambodian Odyssey.”
