Iceland Foreign Minister Jon Baldvin Hannibalsson canceled a meeting with American military officials and protested to the U.S. ambassador after reports that the United States is putting pressure on Japan to stop buying Icelandic whale meat. Hannibalsson was reportedly angered by the reports because he said he was assured by Secretary of State George P. Shultz last week that Washington fully supports an Icelandic program allowing for 78 whales to be hunted annually for research purposes. Iceland is the only country that sells whale meat to Japan.
