An India Supreme Court judge who owns shares in Union Carbide Corp.’s Indian subsidiary withdrew from hearing an appeal on whether the firm should pay interim relief to victims of a deadly gas leak from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, on Dec. 3, 1984. Justice Madhukar Hiralal Kania was replaced by Justice N. D. Ojha. The Supreme Court in New Delhi is hearing an appeal of a lower court’s order directing the Danbury, Conn.-based company to pay interim relief.
