Pitch for Floyd on Lawndale Letterhead May Prompt Inquiry
The state Fair Political Practices Commission has been asked to determine whether election laws were violated when an endorsement by Lawndale Mayor Sarann Kruse and Councilwoman Carol Norman for Assemblyman Richard E. Floyd (D-Hawthorne) appeared on stationery with a city letterhead.
Councilmen Harold E. Hofmann, Larry Rudolph and Dan McKenzie and Planning Commissioner Gary McDonald said at Thursday’s council meeting that they were upset that the endorsement for the 53rd District Assemblyman went out to Lawndale voters with a city of Lawndale letterhead and City Hall return address.
They said they feared that use of the letterhead would cause voters to mistakenly believe the letter was an official endorsement by the city. McDonald said he had complained to the FPPC.
The council voted unanimously to send a letter of protest to Floyd’s campaign.
Kruse and Norman said that they approved the text by telephone but that they were not aware members of the Floyd campaign planned to use the letterhead stationery. “This is one of the lowest tricks I’ve ever heard of,” McKenzie said.
