Suspected gang members shot a teen-age girl in the Crenshaw area early Thursday, leaving her wounded in the street, after her boyfriend shot and killed another gang member who was attempting to rob him, police said.

Krishna (Kris) Hubbard, 17, was in serious condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after surgery for five or six gunshot wounds, hospital officials said.

Killed was reputed gang member Wayne Puckett, 20, a recent parolee from the state prison in Chino, where he had served about 18 months for robbery, Detective John Bunch said. A 17-year-old associate of Puckett’s was being sought, and police are still trying to learn the identity of a third assailant, Bunch said.

The incident began about 12:30 a.m. when three gunmen tried to rob Hubbard’s boyfriend, Jeffrey Love, who is not a gang member, as he was using a pay telephone, Bunch said. “Jeff indicated he didn’t have any money, but if they took him to his house, he’d get them some,” the detective said.

At his home, however, Love got a handgun and shot Puckett, he said.

When Puckett’s companions heard the shots, they forced Hubbard into their car and drove off, Bunch said. They stopped a half-block away, shot Hubbard and left her in the street, he said.
