That high-pitched sound that accompanied Democratic Sen. Lloyd Bentsen through East Texas on Thursday was the excited squeal of star-struck teen-age girls.

Not that the 67-year-old senator had suddenly caught on with the perm-and-mousse set. Word had gotten out that actor Rob Lowe was aboard the campaign bus.

One fan, waiting patiently for the senator’s party to emerge from a diner in the town of Dangerfield, confided: “I just couldn’t care less about Bentsen.”
