Massachusetts Atty. Gen. James Shannon called for an inquest into the death of a cadet who suffered liver damage during his first day of a grueling police training session. Springfield District Court Presiding Justice George Breganis agreed to Shannon’s request, the latest in a series of probes surrounding the treatment of Timothy M. Shepard and 15 other police cadets who became ill during a stress-oriented training session that officials said failed to supply enough drinking water. Shepard, 25, of Pittsfield, Mass., underwent a liver transplant after the Sept. 19 training session. He died Wednesday night at Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., a spokeswoman said.
