Jeff Torborg, a former catcher who once managed the Cleveland Indians, was named manager of the Chicago White Sox Thursday night.

Torborg, 46, replaces Jim Fregosi, fired last month after the team finished the season with a 71-90 record.

“My strengths have always been pitching and catching, and this organization has some outstanding young arms,” Torborg said.

Torborg, who had a 157-201 record with the Indians in 1977-79, agreed to a 2-year contract.

He retired as a catcher in 1973 after 7 seasons with the Dodgers and 3 with the Angels.
