The Heisman Trophy committee has decided to extend the deadline for ballots for this year’s award.

Jack O’Keefe, chairman of the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee, said Thursday that the deadline for ballots to be accepted by an accounting firm in New York is now Dec. 1 at 5 p.m., EST. The previous deadline for the voting sportswriters and broadcasters was Nov. 28.

In changing the deadline, O’Keefe said that the Heisman committee took into account the nationally televised game here Nov. 26 between USC and Notre Dame. USC quarterback Rodney Peete is a highly regarded candidate for the award, as is UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman.

UCLA ends its regular season Nov. 19 against USC at the Rose Bowl.

“There are too many key games to be played the week before we make our announcement (Dec. 3) of the Heisman winner on television,” O’Keefe said.

Besides USC-Notre Dame, there is a game the same day between Miami (Fla.) and Arkansas. Miami quarterback Steve Walsh is also a Heisman Trophy candidate.
