‘Buried Issues’ in the Presidential Race

I am disturbed that in this election Dukakis’ so-called high IQ has become a central theme in judging his future effectiveness. History has shown that intelligence in and of itself does not necessarily predict whether a candidate will be an effective President.

For example, a Republican named Herbert Hoover, and a Democrat named Jimmy Carter. There is no question that both men were extremely intelligent, and very compassionate. However, as Presidents they were both extremely ineffective, and downright detrimental to this country. Why? Both were detail men, and did not know how to delegate authority.

Dukakis’ past record, and present statements show in all probability that he too would be a very ineffective President. Dukakis would probably appoint a Cabinet that he would never consult. It is my impression that Dukakis believes that he has a monopoly on wisdom. This attitude is the last thing this country needs in order to effectively deal with the challenges ahead.

On the other hand, Bush has a balance between the intelligence required of the office, and the experience to deal with the people of this nation. The presidency is not a one-man show, and I believe that Bush realizes that teamwork is essential.
