7-Inch Snow Covers Rockies, Clogs Passes; Glacier Park Road Is Closed
A storm blowing through the Rockies clogged mountain passes in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming with up to 7 inches of snow Friday, closing a highway that crosses the Continental Divide through Glacier National Park.
“It’s snowing like crazy,” park spokeswoman Michelle Rotter said in Montana. She said Going to the Sun Highway, which crosses the Continental Divide through the park at 6,646 feet, was closed.
The highway was covered with up to 7 inches of heavy, wet snow Thursday, Rotter said, and another 3 inches fell Friday.
Winter Park, Colo., received 7 inches of snow Friday, the National Weather Service reported. Winds gusted to 40 m.p.h. in Colorado’s central and northern mountains, causing blowing and drifting snow.
Colorado’s Loveland Pass was closed to traffic, and motorists using approaches to the Eisenhower Tunnel or Vail Pass were required to have their vehicles equipped with chains or snow tires.
