NEW DISPLAYS: The Museum of Natural History and Science in Newport Beach has added three new exhibits.

One is timed to appeal to fans of the new movie “Gorillas in the Mist,” about the life of researcher Dian Fossey. The display of lifelike sculptures by William Munns includes a lowland silverback gorilla, two busts of mountain gorillas, an infant mountain gorilla, a baby orangutan, a pair of Japanese snow monkeys, golden monkeys from China and a proboscis monkey from Borneo.

The “Skullduggery” exhibit of authentic fossil replicas includes skulls of a number of mammal species, some extinct. Included are replicas of two human skulls with deformations similar to those caused by religious, cultural and surgical practices of prehistoric and more recent civilizations. All the replicas are made from molds taken from original specimens.

The museum’s new 9-foot mammoth tusk dates to the Pleistocene epoch (10,000 to 100,000 years ago). Marvin Rohrs, a charter member of the museum, prepared the donated fossil and a group of Tustin High School students made the display mount.
