DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. — Voters in Dixville Notch favored Republican George Bush over Democrat Michael S. Dukakis by a margin of 34 to 3 early today in the first ballots cast in the 1988 presidential election.
The town’s 28 registered Republicans, six Democrats and four independents--one voter wrote in Rep. Jack Kemp (R-N.Y.)--came out in snowy, windy weather to carry on the tradition of casting the nation’s first votes just after midnight. Town officials tallied the results immediately after the last ballot was placed in the box.
