A four-month-old baby boy has died of AIDS in the Black Sea resort of Odessa, after being infected with the virus from his mother before birth, Stroitelnaya Gazeta reported today.

The case was the second reported AIDS death in the Soviet Union. Last month, the Soviet press reported that a Leningrad prostitute, Olga Gayevskaya, had died of AIDS at the age of 29, and health officials urged that her sex partners get themselves tested. Soviet officials criticized doctors for failing to diagnose AIDS until just before Gayevskaya’s death on Sept. 5. For months she was told she merely had tonsillitis.
