Sakharov Given Cardiovascular Tests in Boston
Soviet human rights advocate Andrei D. Sakharov underwent cardiovascular tests at Massachusetts General Hospital today, a hospital spokesman said.
The 67-year-old physicist, who is visiting the United States in his first trip to the West, has asked that no information about his medical condition be released for the next 10 to 14 days, the spokesman said.
He is believed to be in frail health, having spent six years in internal exile for dissident activities until his release in December, 1986. While in exile Sakharov went on a lengthy hunger strike.
When asked about his health at a news conference Monday, Sakharov said only that it was “unchanged.”
The Boston Globe last week quoted sources as saying that Sakharov may have a pacemaker installed while he is in Boston.
