The government today advised all tourists to leave because of unrest in the Indian Ocean island nation.

“For a short while we should also not receive visitors here until the situation clarifies,” Tourist Board Chairman Asker Mosajee told travel industry officials.

“I’m reluctantly, very sadly forced to advise you that because of the situation prevailing and unsettled conditions, it would be necessary for us to ensure all foreigners here get back to their homes as reasonably quickly as possible.

“This is advice, not a ban, but we hope you will heed this,” he told a meeting on the second day of an island-wide anti-government strike.

A foreign tour operator estimated there were about 700 tourists arriving each week.
